The first is the excess phase strengthening. Such an application is specifically that when the water content of the alloy element added to aluminum exceeds its limit solubility, a part of the second phase that cannot be dissolved into the solid solution appears during quenching and heating, which is called the excess phase. It has been well developed in intermetallic compounds where the excess phase of aluminum alloys are mostly hard and brittle. They play a role in hindering slip and dislocation movement in the alloy and increase the hardness. The greater the number of excess phases in the alloy, the better the strengthening effect, but when there are too many excess phases, the alloy becomes brittle and the strength and plasticity decrease.

The second is the strengthening of the aging process. After heat treatment of the aluminum alloy, a supersaturated aluminum-based solid solution can be obtained. When this supersaturated aluminum-based solid solution is heated to a certain temperature at room temperature, its strength and hardness increase with time and extension, but its plasticity decreases. This process is called aging. The phenomenon of increasing the strength and hardness of the alloy during the aging process is called age hardening.
